What is a container chassis?

A container chassis is also known as an intermodal chassis or skeletal trailer. It is a semi-trailer designed to transport shipping containers. The shipping container is placed on the trailer frame and secured with twistlocks. Chassis come in fixed and extendable versions. A fixed chassis is suitable for one specific length. An extendable model can carry multiple sizes, making it more flexible for varying routes and loads.

The most common sizes are 20ft, 40ft and 45ft. Some models are also suitable for 30ft containers. A 20ft container fits on a fixed 20ft model, but can also be carried at the rear of a 40ft trailer as a second unit. Suitability per size is listed in each vehicle's advertisement.

• Fixed chassis are set up for one container length, typically 20ft or 40ft. They are compact, lightweight and well suited for port transport and routes with consistent load sizes.
• Extendable models are adjustable in length and can carry multiple container sizes. Models such as the D-TEC Flexitrailer and the Broshuis MFCC are popular with carriers working with both 20ft and 40ft containers.
• NCH and hook-arm trailers are equipped with an NCH system or hook-arm that allows fast container swapping without additional equipment. They are commonly used in the recycling sector, port transport and waste processing.

Many trailers in our stock have a lift axle, which reduces tyre wear on empty runs and lowers the cost per kilometre.

What does a used container chassis cost?

The price depends on the type, year, condition and options. Basic fixed models for 20ft or 40ft typically start from around €6,000. Extendable and multifunctional models such as the D-TEC Flexitrailer or Broshuis MFCC range from approximately €12,000 to €30,000 depending on year and condition.
